Guest Blog: What’s the Point of Pinterest?
It’s been close to a year since I was accepted into the Pinterest fold. When I first joined the ranks the only other ‘pinners’ I knew and followed were other crafters, artists and bloggers. At that time being on Pinterest was like a simple extension of the beautiful blogs I was already spending my days frequenting. To be quite honest, it felt like a very feminine space - a place to gather and sort creative inspiration.
Social Media Week in Toronto
What a privilege it was to attend Social Media week! I had an amazing time and may have injured my thumbs live tweeting like a madman. #totallyworthit
So what did I do? I met a number of experts in the social media field and learned a few tips and tricks along the way about being more social on the interwebs. Since it was social media week, a majority of the advice was related to digital tools and techniques but there was plenty of talk about offline time. The key point that many experts kept repeating was, “don’t forget what you learned in kindergarden”.
3 Things the BlackBerry Does Right

RIM is in a tough place these days and criticism for its many mistakes are common on Twitter, news networks and well, everywhere. To be fair, I jumped on the bandwagon a few months back with a post titled 3 Things RIM is Doing Wrong. So definitely not taking a holier-than-thou approach here, I am thou!
Being Geo-Social: Turning spaces into places and why it matters

A quick history lesson is in order before I dig into why geosocial tools, like Foursquare and Gowalla, are groundbreaking and relevant.
Aside: Check out the SocialWayne INFOGRAPHIC about Location-based apps.
As I’ve said before, WIND deserves an award for being so social media savvy. This video is slick, fun to watch and delivers all the key messages. I’m proud to say that WIND is a Canadian company that gets it.
Full disclosure: I’ve been a WIND customer for about a year and a half now. Good people :)
Free Tools Series: Social Mention and Why it Matters
I’ve been looking at web analysis tools this week and came across this neat video by Marcel Crudele about Social Mention.
I’ve accidentally stabbed myself a few times with this “safety” equipment :P

The Curious Case of Google Analytics
I’ve recently started using Google Analytics for my Tumblr blog and found really interesting statistics about the internet traffic to this site. Since Google Analytics is a free tool I wasn’t expecting a lot of information to be presented to me. You get what you pay for right? In this case you get a lot of something for nothing. That something came in the form of overwhelming amounts of data about my blog’s visitors.
So let’s get down to the nitty gritty about what this powerful measurement tool can really do for you.
Some of the categories of visitor traffic include:
- Demographics
- System
- Mobile
3 Things RIM is Doing Wrong
As many of you know, Research in Motion (RIM) and its BlackBerry have been trending on Twitter and other social web platforms recently because of a major service outage crisis. The crisis has angered customers, investors and has led to a lot of negativity regarding the BlackBerry brand and RIM in general.
In fact, Kevin Allen’s recent article in Ragan’s PR Daily explains that investors feel that RIM’s past mistakes have turned “a simple, forgivable glitch into a disaster.” I read that remark as, RIM has damaged its reputation from past mistakes and this incident is the last straw for investors. It seems strange that RIM isn’t doing everything within its power to repair its reputation with its stakeholders. Or is it?
So I did a little digging and was shocked to find that RIM is heavily involved in the social web arena. The number of twitter accounts that RIM owns and operates are staggering! One for each language and/or country. On top of that they have websites, blogs and forums for developers, customer service and technical support. Target audience? Check! If that wasn’t enough, there’s a very large BlackBerry community and they have websites, blogs and forums of their own. Hardcore fans? Check! By all accounts they seem to be doing really well.
So, what is RIM doing wrong?
